Jatakam Matching for Telugu Marriages: Porutham, Doshas and What Really Matters
In a Telugu family the jatakam is matched before anyone makes a phone call. The grandmother asks for the nakshatram, the father asks how many poruthams matched, and someone asks whether there is Kuja dosham. This guide explains what those questions mean, how the score is built, and which parts deserve real attention. It is written for families, not astrologers, and it is meant to remove fear rather than add it.
What jatakam matching actually compares

The jatakam, or birth chart, is cast from the date, exact time and place of birth. Matching two jatakams in the South Indian tradition mostly uses the position of the Moon in each chart: its nakshatram (one of 27 birth stars), its padam (quarter) and its rasi (one of 12 moon signs). From those, the astrologer computes the poruthams, the points of agreement between the two charts. In the Ashtakuta system used across Andhra, Telangana and Karnataka there are eight poruthams worth 36 points in total.
The eight poruthams and their Telugu names
| Kuta | Telugu usage | Points | What it looks at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | Varna porutham | 1 | Temperament and outlook. The smallest factor. |
| Vasya | Vasya porutham | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence between the two. |
| Tara | Dina or Tara porutham | 3 | Counted from one nakshatram to the other; concerns health and longevity. |
| Yoni | Yoni porutham | 4 | Physical and instinctive compatibility, based on the animal symbol of each nakshatram. |
| Graha Maitri | Rasyadhipati porutham | 5 | Friendship between the lords of the two rasis; mental compatibility. |
| Gana | Gana porutham | 6 | Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa gana; nature and behaviour. |
| Bhakoot | Rasi porutham | 7 | Relative position of the two moon signs; family welfare and prosperity. |
| Nadi | Nadi porutham | 8 | Adi, Madhya or Antya nadi; health and progeny. The heaviest factor. |
The points are weighted deliberately. Nadi alone is worth 8 and Bhakoot 7, so a chart pair can lose 15 of 36 points on two factors while agreeing on everything else. That is why families are told the total and then, separately, whether there is Nadi dosham or Rasi dosham. For a fuller treatment of each factor see our Ashtakuta matching explainer.
What the score out of 36 means
- Below 18: traditionally not recommended without a closer look. Many astrologers will still examine the individual doshas and the planetary strengths before saying no.
- 18 to 23: acceptable. This is where most matched Telugu marriages sit.
- 24 to 27: very good.
- 28 and above: excellent, and uncommon.
A high total with an uncancelled Nadi dosham is treated more cautiously than a moderate total with no dosham. The number is a summary, not a verdict.
Kuja dosham, Nadi dosham and the exceptions families forget

Kuja dosham (Mangal dosha) is the one Telugu families fear most. It arises when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant, the Moon or Venus. What is often forgotten is that the classical texts list many cancellations: Mars in its own sign or exaltation, Mars in certain signs in those houses, the same dosham in both charts, and several others. A great many charts that a cursory reading calls "Kuja dosham" are cancelled on inspection.
Nadi dosham occurs when both partners share the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya). It carries the full 8-point penalty, but it too has recognised exceptions, for example when the two nakshatrams are the same but the padams differ, or when the rasi lords are the same. Our Nadi dosha and Mangal dosha guide walks through the exceptions in detail.
The practical advice is simple: if a proposal is otherwise strong and the only objection is a dosham, ask the astrologer specifically whether the cancellations apply before setting the proposal aside.
What to have ready before matching
- Date of birth, the exact time (from the hospital record or the family's note, not from memory) and the town of birth for both people.
- Nakshatram, padam and rasi if the family already has the jatakam written out.
- Gotram for both families, since same-gotram matches are traditionally avoided regardless of the score.
- The name of the astrologer or the panchangam the family follows, so both sides are reading from the same ayanamsa. Small differences here explain most disagreements between two astrologers.
Three myths worth dropping
- "36 out of 36 is the goal." A perfect score is rare and not required. Most happy marriages in the community were matched in the twenties.
- "Any dosham means no." Doshams have cancellations. Ask.
- "A good score guarantees a good marriage." The jatakam is one input beside education, temperament, family values and the two people actually liking each other. Treat it as a filter, not a promise.
Questions families ask
- What is a good jatakam matching score for a Telugu marriage?
- Out of 36 points, 18 and above is generally accepted, 24 and above is considered very good, and 28 and above is excellent. Below 18 most Telugu families ask their astrologer to look closer before proceeding, though the individual doshas matter more than the total.
- What is Kuja dosham and does it stop a marriage?
- Kuja dosham (Mangal dosha) arises when Mars sits in certain houses of the birth chart. It does not automatically stop a marriage: many charts have cancellations, and matching a Kuja dosham chart with another Kuja dosham chart is the traditional remedy. A competent astrologer checks the cancellations before pronouncing dosham.
- Can jatakam be matched without the exact birth time?
- The nakshatram and rasi based poruthams can be matched from the date of birth and an approximate time, but Kuja dosham and the finer analysis need the exact time and place. If the time is uncertain, tell the astrologer; a birth-time rectification may be suggested.
- Do Telugu families match jatakam for a second marriage too?
- Usually yes, and often more carefully. The same poruthams apply. Families in that situation can read the second marriage page on MSMatrimony for how the platform handles it.
- Does MSMatrimony do the jatakam matching?
- Yes. Members enter the date, time and place of birth once, and the platform computes the Ashtakuta score between any two profiles before contact details are exchanged. Founder Madhavi Sharma also offers personal astrology consultations for families who want a deeper reading.
